Plastering refers to the construction process of using plaster. for walls within a building or to create decorative features on ceilings. Plastering. has been used in building construction for centuries.
When plastering walls. they are usually smooth and with textured patterns used for the ceilings. Modern plasters come already mixed. The mixture is full of ingredients to help slow down the setting time as well as supplying insulation and guarding against fire. Other ingredients slow down the setting time but a plastering mixture usually lasts for 2 hours and if it is left any longer the mixture will start to set quickly before it can be smoothed out. The only thing plasterers need to add to the mixture is water.
There are a number of different plasters but two common forms used are gypsum based and cement based. Cement based mixtures are used mainly for outdoors use as it is hardwearing. Gypsum based mixtures are used only indoors because dampness and outdoor weather will attack the plaster and cause it to crack. Cement based plasters can also be used indoors for areas that require a thick cover or that can be affected by dampness.
Sub classifications of the PLASTERING trade classification are Interior Moulding, Replastering, Polished, Spraying, Waterproof, GRG, Exterior Mouldings, Screeding, Fibrous, Finishes, Ornate, Artex, Decorative Fibre, Lime
