Construction fatalities “far too high”

Ucatt has hit back at figures that suggest a drop in the number of construction industry deaths in the year to March.

Provisional figures show that 49 people were killed on construction sites, a slight drop at 2% less than the year before.

However, Ucatt highlighted that the reduction of fatalities came as thousands were leaving the industry because of the downturn.

Ucatt general secretary Steve Murphy said “No one should consider the latest construction fatality figures to be good news in anyway.

“Deaths remain far too high, especially given the declining number of people working in the industry. Each and every death results in a family being left devastated when a loved one is killed.”
