The site for a 700 capacity super prison for the north east of Scotland is to be announced in Peterhead later today by Mike Ewart the chief executive of the Scottish Prison Service.

The new jail will be built in the Peterhead area and replace the aging Victorian-era prisons in both Peterhead and Craiginches in Aberdeen.

The Scottish Government has pledged a "world-class" facility. Craiginches is of the most overcrowded prisons in Scotland.

Peterhead is a jail exclusively for sex offenders.
