Manchester City Council has approved the build of a thousand new homes, as well as shops and a health centre in West Gorton, East Manchester.

Plans for the 52 hectare area, which include a park, will see a development of 76 local authority flats on Pottery Lane, more semi-detached homes and a small amount of bungalows on Gortonvilla Walk. There will also be new allotments and a car park for Manchester Climbing Centre on Bennett Street.

Work on the regeneration project, to be gradually phased in over 10 years, will be overseen by regeneration group New East Manchester along with Manchester City Council, the Homes and Communities Agency and housing association Guinness Northern Counties.

Manchester City Council executive member for neighbourhood services, councillor Paul Andrews, commented: “Manchester City Council has a long-standing commitment to transforming the West Gorton estate. We have worked hard to overcome the challenges and obstacles posed by the recession which have hindered our progress. And we are now at the point where we have approved a deliverable programme of transformation for the community of West Gorton.”
