Demolition work uncovers World War II one-man air raid shelter
The shelter was found by demolition workers Connell Brothers during the demolition of the Whipp & Bourne site at a Lancashire factory, a heavy duty electrical switchgear manufacturer.
Air-raid shelters were available as early as 1938, before war was declared. made to a standard Home Office design, these tiny shelters were installed in homes and public areas as well as underground stations throughout London to enable key staff to remain on duty during air raids.
Having discovered this rare example of war memorabilia, Connell Brothers are liasing with local historians in order to relocate the air raid shelter to a local museum.
