Acarpenter is a skilled craftsman who can create a variety of objects out of wood. This includes woodworking. constructing buildings. furniture. building frames and intricate objects.
While carpentry skill is typically gained through experience. an apprenticeship and qualified training courses are vital to achieving a long career.
There are different types of carpenters. including:
Finish Carpenter: is someone whose profession involves designing and making cabinetry. furniture. intricate woodworking. model building. instrument making. fine and intricate detail on buildings and joinery.
Cabinetmaker: is a carpenter who specialises in making cabinets. dressers. wardrobes and other furniture.
Trim Carpenter: specialises in moulding and trim. such as mantels. door and window casings. baseboard. and other types of ornamental work.
Scenic Carpenter: Works in filmmaking. TV. and the theatre and specialises in building and dismantling sets and backgrounds.
Framer: A framer builds the raw structure or framework of buildings. Work includes platform framing. balloon framing. or timber framing.
Roofer: Carry out the construction of roofs. specialising on rafters. beams. and trusses.
Formwork Carpenter: creates the shuttering and falsework used in concrete construction.
When carrying out a project. carpenters must first set out designs. This includes measuring and arranging materials. The carpenter then cuts and shapes the material and uses a number of tools to do this. including chisels. drills and saws. Finally. the carpenter joins the items together with glue. nails or staples. When working with ready-made parts. the carpenter's job is easier.Carpenters may also repair desks and cabinets. fit and make wooden doors and windows and repair broken furniture.
