Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate mineral with fibrous crystals. which became popular among construction industries between the 1950s and mid 1980s due to its resilience to heat. chemical damage and electricity. Substitutes are now used including fibreglass. Portland cement. glass wool and silica. Asbestos can be toxic and the inhalation of fibres over a long period of time can cause damage to the lungs and in some cases severe illnesses.
Tradesmen have to be careful of asbestos risks while working on buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000. There are a number of safety precautions if they are. including insuring that they are not working on any asbestos containing products. that all workers have been informed of any asbestos out-of-bound areas on site and that all workers have seen the asbestos register if they are not working on domestic premises and are trained in working with asbestos.
Asbestos is generally disposed of as hazardous waste in landfill sites but it can be recycled by transforming it into silicate glass. Sometimes it is safe to leave asbestos alone. unless it becomes airborne. which can occur when areas containing particles are damaged or disturbed.
